Gordon visited the Pets at Home store in his constituency to meet the people working across the British pet care brand and learn more about a major employer in the community.
He was welcomed by Pets at Home Head of Media and Corporate Affairs Gillian Hammond, Chief People and Legal Officer Louise Stonier, and Blackpool Store Manager Adam Whitehead.
Gordon was given a tour of the store, during which he heard how the pet care company is boosting investment in both its people and physical stores, at a time when many retailers are moving out of stores and onto the web.
As Shadow Higher Education, Further Education and Skills Minister, He was particularly interested in finding out more about the apprenticeship schemes that Pets at Home offers and met with Apprenticeships Manager, Michelle Fielder, who explained more about the roles that Pets at Home offers in grooming, support office, and distribution.
He also visited the Vets4Pets practice, viewing the on-site operating theatre and meeting some of the vets, nurses and care assistants that ensure top-quality pet care is at the heart of the business.
The Blackpool store is a significant local employer. Much of the group’s success is down to the dedication, commitment and knowledge of the employees, working across the wide mix of services offered including pet retail products, grooming and vet treatments. The Pets at Home Blackpool branch is a driver of growth and investment across the community.
Gordon said: “As a former owner of two dogs myself I found the visit very enjoyable and informative. The work Pets at Home are doing in the community with charities and local rescue centres shows the welfare of animals is at the heart of everything they do. I was also pleased to learn more about their wide ranging apprenticeship programme which has over 300 apprentices in the Pets At Home group. It’s great to see a businesses like theirs investing in their staff – something I encourage businesses of all sizes to do when I visit them.”
Gillian Hammond, Head of Media and Corporate Affairs, said: “We are very proud of our Blackpool store and the apprenticeships that we offer in almost every area of our business. It was a fantastic opportunity to show Gordon the hard work of our employees and their great relationship with our customers. It’s an exciting time for the business and we are grateful for the hard work of the entire Pets at Home team.”
