Gordon has signed Greener UK’s “Pledge for the Environment” to show his support for environmental protections as Britain begins the process of leaving the EU.
The pledge calls on Gordon and other MPs to do everything in their power to:
- Establish the UK as a world leader on the environment by committing to match or exceed current environmental, wildlife and habitat protections.
- Ensure the UK leads on climate change by publishing robust low carbon investment plans and driving the Paris Agreement’s implementation internationally.
- Create a countryside richer in nature by supporting farmers and landowners to deliver environmental benefits alongside a thriving farming sector.
- Make the UK a world leader in innovative and sustainable marine and fisheries management.
Gordon said: “I am very pleased to sign Greener UK’s Pledge for the environment and it links to the points I made at my Cleaner Greener Blackpool event at the Solaris Centre last year.
“There is evidence of strong public support for the same or stronger level of environmental safeguards following Brexit. This is crucial for a town like Blackpool so we keep our bathing waters to a high standard and build on the progress we have recently where our beaches have earned blue flag status.”
Greener UK is a coalition of 13 major environmental NGOs (Non-Governmental Organisations), who came together in the wake of Brexit so the UK secured the benefits of existing environmental laws and built on these to ensure a world class environment for all.
