Protecting and making the countryside a key priority

Headshot.jpgOne of my first acts when I first became a Parliamentary candidate in Blackpool South right back in 1990 was to support local people and CPRE  (Campaign to Protect Rural England) in a campaign to retain open land off East Park Drive.

As your MP I fought long and hard with hundreds of local residents to support the campaign to oppose unsustainable building on Marton Moss.

I am continuing to work with them to monitor critically the actions of developers there and to hold the Council's planning office to account to make sure developers do not default on their promises and agreements, and to resist any future unsustainable development in this special area of Blackpool.

I strongly support Blackpool Council's current initiatives on sustainable homes developments on brownfield sites at Rigby Road and off Central Drive in the centre of Blackpool.

I have consistently argued for the reduction of VAT on repairs and renewal to encourage renovation, conservation and incentives to reuse and adapt on existing sites and brownfield sites.

I have been pressing alongside local rail campaigners Transport Ministers and Northern Rail to take forward improvements on the South Fylde line from Blackpool South station into Preston , including a passing loop to enable more frequent services. This I believe would help relieve road congestion across the rural fringe of Blackpool while helping promote sustainable rural linked with our seaside tourism in Blackpool and the development of small, eco-friendly businesses that would help boost the local economy and to preserve the special character of the area.

If you look at my election literature during this General Election campaign, you will see one of my specific pledges is to make protecting Blackpool's green spaces, quality of life and decent homes to live in my priorities.

As both a former national judge of conservation and heritage awards and a member of Blackpool s Civic Trust these are issues to which I have given consistent commitment and remain passionate about.

I hope I will receive support to continue to pursue them with your support in the General Election to continue my efforts in this area by being re elected as your MP.
