Gordon has called on local shops to enter the “Best Small Shops” competition, being supported by the All Party Parliamentary Group for Small Shops and also the Independent Retailers Confederation.
Small Shops can submit their application online at www.bestsmallshops.uk and have to write in no more than 500 words why they think they should win.
The deadline for the competition is at 4pm on Friday 30th January and the winner will be selected on the criteria including innovation within the business, engagement with the community and entrepreneurial activities.
Gordon said: “Blackpool has a great tradition of small shops, each making an individual and unique contribution to the local economy.
“Though my “Back Blackpool Businesses” campaign and through Small Business Saturday, I have visited many local and niche shops in South Shore and across the rest of the town – this competition is a great opportunity to show off the brilliant work they do in supporting their local communities.
“Speaking to shop owners in Blackpool, they tell me they often have a connection with their customers that is much more personal and valuable than the bigger shops, and I know this connection is very much valued.”
For last year’s Small Business Saturday, Gordon visited Johnson’s of Bond Street as well as several independent shops run by Dave Clues on Waterloo Road.
The small shops selected for the shortlist will be informed by 16th February 2015. The shortlisted retailers will be then invited to attend the House of Commons awards reception from 1pm-3pm on 25th February 2015.
Blackpool South shops who do enter the competition, can they also notify Gordon’s Communications Assistant Andrew Bettridge at firstname.lastname@example.org .
